About Artist

Bhagwaan’s painting style involves combining the harmony of colors and depth achieved by the placement of transparent or opaque overtones by controlling the intensity with viscous colours, all dealt in swift, sweeping lines, spots and streaks.

Known for his deft bold strokes, Bhagwan S Chavan —- who lives in Cholamandal Artists Village, a little way off Chennai — is considered one of India’s most brilliant abstractionists. Working in monochrome, his paintings have a single-mindedness and speed that makes him seem like a man possessed.
Chavan has his own peculiar and unique sense of colour. While painting, his speed and expertise, blend to bring about a classic touch. His use of transparent and opaque tones balances the intensity of fierce colours dealt with in the lyrical way with sweeping lines and brush work. Alumni of the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai the artist has settled down in Chennai. He has had numerous solo and group shows in India and in Paris. He has been the recipient of the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and the Biennale at Bharath Bhavan, Bhopal.
Chavan’s paintings form a part of the National Gallery Of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Academi, New Delhi and many other important collections. His work has also been documented in a short film titled ‘Through The Window’ by R. V. Ramani.
Having travelled across the world, his paintings are reflective of the inspirations he has picked up from artists and art styles prevalent in other countries. “I have travelled around Europe though not formerly studying any where, but just travelling to many places. I have soaked up the atmosphere at places like the Royal College Of Arts in London,” he says.
Bhagwan Chavan lives and works from Chennai.
